Castelo de Vide

This sister city to Marvao shares its charm but is more rooted in agriculture.

In the upper left of this picture you can see Marvao nestled above the gray mountain in the distance.

Crops cover hillside of Castelo de Vide.

The way up to the castle takes you past a Roman fountain and through the Jewish quarter. Jews were assimilated citizens before the Inquisition. In 1989 Mario Soares said, "In the name of Portugal I ask the forgiveness of the Jews for the persecutions of which they were victims in our country" at an ancient Sephardic synagogue (at right).

We luckily found an immaculate Camas on a side street below the Castle, down hill from the Jewish quarter. We are sitting in the shade of grape vines.
