Park in the square in Caceres center and the gates to a perfectly preserved walled city await your foot falls. Be careful to buy a parking ticket or police will fine your car.
Caceres' walled city is built entirely of yellow stone. Storks nest on roof tops and above corner balconies. We extended our day by hiking to see "our lady of the mountain."
As we whizzed to Merida it was impossible to miss this castle. It was the only one we saw in Spain built on flat land.
Merida was the first strong hold of the Roman Empire in Spain. The aqueducts, bridges, amphitheater and theater still stand after being built around 250 B.C.
